An automobile needs a mechanic to do the complicated work like servicing and motor repairs , but you can do the equally important little jobs such as tire checking, filling the cooling system, checking the oil, filling the windscreen washer, checking that all the lights are working, these are known as running repairs.

The legs are like the automobile there are major problems that can't be done by the owner that may need medical intervention with specialist knowledge and the correct tools to fix them.


Once you know how to check the minor areas of how the legs work you can do running repairs to help keep them mobile, after all they are your personal transport and unlike an autotombile that you can trade in, the legs have to last you a long time and you can't just swap them for another pair.

Running repairs can be done by anyone at any time because there is nothing wrong with the legs and it is out of your scope to be able to fix them.

Everyone has fair wear and tear on the legs as they age on the bones muscles and the other systems involved in moving and not much can be done about this as they may need medical intervention as problems arise, but some of the preventable issues can be lessened by doing leg maintenance on an ongoing basis.

Every day we stress our legs to some extent but they quckly recover so we can do what we have to do in our daily lives, we go to bed and rest while we do this the body does its job and the legs are ready to go for the next day.

Everyone abuses their legs too much at some time and while they heal they become dysfunctional and it is not until the body has dealt with this can the legs function the way they should again!




We put our legs in situations where we go too far, too fast, too hard and we regret that we did it because they are going to make us pay by getting sore, tight and stiff, our ankles swell and we get blisters because our legs have filled with fluid and our feet don't fit in our shoes and rub against the leather.

It is bad enough when you are suffering at the time but in extreme leg stress the after effects can be just as painful!


All it takes it one part of the body movement systems to start to fail and a snowball effect takes place making the other parts join in as well and your life as you knew it changes as well until the body recovers


Meantime your functional movement is affected and what should be simple tasks you usually do on a daily basis takes on mammoth proportions and difficulties in being able to do them.

This is quite funny because it was self inflicted and they will get over it but it demonstrates how functional leg movement can be affected when the legs have been abused, and we have all felt this way before.


There are basically 2 types of leg stress


Acute-this is periodic and the body eventually repairs itself given time without assistance of any sort but it is uncomfortable and painful while the healing is going on.  (Shopping, dancing, walking in high heels, walking in the bush, standing in long lines waiting for something)


Chronic-this is ongoing long term and is consistent where the body simply doesn't get chance let the legs recover before it has to go out and do it all again.  (Occupation, sport, occupational)


Distressed legs and extreme Leg stress


There are 3 main groups of people with distressed legs and maintenance concerns

The 'Intentional Athlete' with sports related fatigued leg recovery problems who makes a deliberate choice to do a chosen sport; this could be running-walking-soccer or any other sport.

The 'Accidental Athlete' with occupationally caused distressed legs; they have a profession or job in which they spend many hours over days, weeks or years, standing sitting or walking on a consistent basis.
Nurses-office people-factory workers-exhibition people who are on a small stand all day.

'Default Distressed Legs' those who just get them
People who follow an interest, go shopping, have a hobby, passion, or just do something or do not do something and distressed legs result from it.
Bushwalkers-airline passengers-long distance bus passengers-tourists doing museums and monuments etc.

Other than medical reasons which should have been checked out and have been or is being dealt withause distressed legs?

Calf muscle pump inefficiency leading to stressed legs can be caused by-

  • Constant sitting-the calf muscles are not being used at all so they do not pump fluid up the legs
  • Standing in one place-the muscles do not move and provide power to the calf muscle pump
